It might be an understatement in saying the interest in Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and their vast array of topologies, constitutions and applications have incurred great interest over the past two decades. Many areas of chemical research have been impacted in the potential that MOFs bring to the table. These include gas storage and separations, chemical catalysis, endeavors in the removal of harmful and toxic environmental chemicals, magnetics, and the reason for which I aim to capture your attention now- biomedical purposes and drug delivery. Many MOFs highlighted in literature thus far have gravitated towards release of cargo on the scale of hours or days. It could be suggested that a system wherein a stimulus would, quickly or in bursts, trigger a very selective and targetable release of cargo, at least as a proof of concept, could be of value to the advancement of drug delivery metal organic frameworks. Envisioned in the future could be application in sub-dermal release of chemotherapy drugs directly to the site of a tumor. The design, development and planned proof of concept for a “gated” drug delivery MOF system is discussed.
