Summer 2018

Sydney Giles

Undergraduate Institution: West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV

SURO Research: Duncan Laboratory, Physical Chemistry

Sydney measured the spectrum of small nitrogen containing carbocations using infrared laser spectroscopy. She focused on methaniminium, an ion of a neutral species that has been found in the interstellar medium.

Diana Graves

Undergraduate Institution: University of North Georgia, Dahlonega, GA

SURO Research: Popik Laboratory, Organic Chemistry

Diana worked with Masha Sutton in Dr. Popik’s research group studying the organic synthesis of novel photo-reactive compounds. They worked on a synthesis path for caged compounds that will become fluorescent upon stimulation with light in order to measure the amount of drug released during stimulation.

Diana Graves

Jasmine Harris

Undergraduate Institution: Valdosta State University, Valdosta, GA

SURO Research: Frossard Laboratory, Analytical Chemistry

Jasmine worked with fellow SURO student Marlyne to measure the surface tension of seawater samples using pendant drop tensiometry and run photochemistry experiments in a solar simulator.

Jasmine Harris

Kaitlin Luedecke

Undergraduate Institution: University of Georgia, Athens, GA

SURO Research: Robinson Laboratory, Inorganic Chemistry

In Kaitlin’s research, she explored the synthesis, molecular structure, and equilibrium dynamics of the 1,3,2-diazaborole-derived carbene-BX3 complex (X=Br, I).

Kaitlin Luedecke

Marlyne Serratos

Undergraduate Institution: Georgia Gwinnett College, Lawrenceville, GA

SURO Research: Frossard Laboratory, Analytical Chemistry

Marlyne worked with fellow SURO student Jasmine to measure the surface tension of seawater samples using pendant drop tensiometry and run photochemistry experiments in a solar simulator.

Marlyne Serratos

Rebekah Soliday

Undergraduate Institution: James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA

SURO Research: Douberly and Frossard Laboratories, Physical Chemistry

Rebekah’s research focused on high level geometry and frequency calculations of n-propyl and i-propyl radicals and O2

Rebekah Soliday

William White

Undergraduate Institution: Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA

SURO Research: Douberly Laboratory, Physical Chemistry

William’s research consisted of designing and optimizing a visible wavemeter.
