In 2000, Mohamed et al. reported gold nanoparticles with a luminescence quantum yield six orders of magnitude greater than bulk gold.1 The enhancement was attributed to localized surface plasmon resonances. Recent studies understand and engineer the luminescence of nanoparticles by the altering particle geometries and plasmon modes.2-4 Interestingly, gold nanoparticles show two-photon-induced luminescence (TPIL) that can be measured at the single-particle level.2,3 This talk will review experimental techniques and results that resolve the TPIL mechanism and enhancement  factors.
