Abstract
The inventive catalysts are of the formula I or II wherein: M is ruthenium or osmium; X and X1 are the same or different and are each independently an anionic ligand; L, L1 and L2 are the same or different and are each independently a neutral electron donor ligand; and, R and R1 are each independently hydrogen or a substituent selected from the group consisting of C1-20 alkyl, C2-20 alkenyl, C2-20 alkynyl, aryl, C1-20 carboxylate, C1-20 alkoxy, C2-20 alkenyloxy, C2-20 alkynyloxy, aryloxy, C2-20 alkoxycarbonyl, C1-20 alkylthio, C1-20 alkylsulfonyl and C1-20 alkylsulfinyl and silyl. A catalyst for ring-opening metathesis polymn. of cyclic or acyclic olefins has the formula I or II, where M = Ru or Os, X and X1 = anionic ligand, e.g. halide, L = N-heterocyclic carbene ligand or phosphine, e.g. 1,3-dimesitylimidazolin-2-ylidene or tricyclohexylphosphine, L1' and L2 = (un)substituted heteroarene selected from the group consisting of pyridine, bipyridine, 4-pyrrolidinopyridine, phenathroline or biquinoline, etc., R and R1 = H or a substituent selected from C1-20 alkyl, C2-20 alkenyl, C2-20 alkyne, aryl, C1-20 carboxylate, C1-20 alkoxy, C2-20 alkenyloxy, C2-20 alkynyloxy, aryloxy, C2-20 alkoxycarbonyl, C1-20 alkylthio, C1-20 alkylsulfonyl and C1-20 alkylsulfinyl and silyl.
