| In conjunction with the National ACS, we provide opportunities for students in chemical sciences to develop themselves as scientists and as members of the community at large. We work with the University to plan events such as seminars and demonstrations. We work with local elementary schools through our Kids & Chemistry program, which encourages younger students to consider things from a chemical perspective. There are numerous social events throughout the year, giving students and professors the opportunity to get to know one another in a less formal situation than is found in the classroom. Field trips provide the student affiliates with an opportunity to observe a professional working atmosphere and expose them to the wide variety of options available in the chemical sciences. Scientific meetings, such as the National ACS meeting (which was held in Anaheim this year and will be in San Francisco in the spring of 2000), are also a large part of our operations. Such meetings introduce students to the conference atmosphere and allow interaction with other students with similar interests. This year we presented a poster reviewing our chapter's activities. Jessica Metcalf also presented a poster on her research in synthetic organic chemistry. |
