A Year in Review: 1998 - 1999 Student Affiliates Activities
Heather and Jessie with guest speaker Dr. Christina Bailey following her departmental colloquium (sponsored jointly by UGA's SAACS and the department of chemistry). Dr. Bailey's seminar on integrating computers into a laboratory and lecture for general chemistry was enjoyed by many faculty members in addition to the student affiliates. Dr. Bailey teaches at California Polytechnic State University.
UGA's Glass Blowing Shop was kind enough to provide the Student Affiliates with a tour of their facilities and some insight into the basics of glassware production. Here, Bob Ketch demonstrates the repair of large equipment.
Lee Marek of Naperville North High School in Illinois, famous for his popular demonstrations on numerous television shows, performed and explained some stunning chemistry for a sizable audience ranging from UGA faculty to undergraduate students, to younger children. Mr. Marek was invited in conjunction with the Northeast Georgia Local ACS chapter.
Mr. Marek shrouds himself in a cloud of vapor to intensify the moment.
A moment of dawning comprehension for Dr. Bhakta, Jessica Metcalf and Heather Lewis as the secrets are revealed. Those with weaker constitutions chose to remain seated for this particular demonstration.
