Safety in the Chemical Laboratory

Research safety in the Department is managed by the Safety Committee. There are several training programs available (and/or required) for personnel in the Department. The SEARCH button at the top of this page provides access to our database of training certification for these programs. We highlight here information about these programs and other links to important safety information.

  • Training Programs:
    Right to Know Program
    All personnel require annual RTK training.
    Staff who do not come in contact with chemicals can train on-line.
    Chemical-specific RTK training can be in person by ESD representative or on-line.
    Proof of training (certificate) is provided.

    Hazardous Waste Training

    All members of research groups that generate hazardous waste must be trained annually.
    Training involves how to handle, label, dispose of hazardous wastes.
    Training sessions can be on-site or at STDC.
    Documentation of training is available.

    Chemical Inventory Reporting System

    CIRS is used to maintain research group chemical inventory.
    PI of every group with chemicals is required to have one-time training.
    Only UGA employees (not undergraduates) may have CIRS username.
    Department maintains documentation.
